What is cannabidiol? The effect on the human body

Cannabidiol (short form "CBD") is a hardly psychoactive cannabinoid, which is obtained from female hemp. The medical effect against muscle cramps, inflammations, psychological fears and nausea has been investigated.

In this article we would like to explain how cannabidiol affects the human body. In this context, we take a closer look at the chemical composition, we look at the active substances in detail and finally we look at the spectrum of activity of this substance known so far.

Therefore, if you are looking for in-depth information about the substance, read this article carefully to gain a deeper understanding of the subject.

Chemical composition and mode of action of cannabidiol

The medical use of cannabidiol can be traced back to a long tradition. According to different statements the hemp extract was already used 5000 to 10,000 years ago for medical purposes.

Extensive scientific research has increasingly been carried out in the recent past. Within the framework of these tests, 489 components contained in the hemp plant have already been detected.

The components of the hemp plant

The ingredients included 70 phytocannabinoids. In this context, tetrahydrocannabinole, known to most as THC, cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinole (CBN) and finally cannabigerole (CBG) were extensively investigated.

In this context, we distinguish between the psychoactive components such as THC, which occurs in high doses in cannabis, and the non-psychoactive components such as cannabidiol, which binds to the receptor system and can contribute to the alleviation of physical and mental pain.

The last point in particular is dealt with in more detail in this article, in order to clearly emphasise that the substance is not a narcotic that impairs the consumer in any way in everyday life.

The substance is regarded in the health industry as an ingredient which is not psychoactive and therefore combines all the advantages of the hemp plant without causing a state of intoxication.

Components of CBD

The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system is made up of fatty acids which are linked to the nervous system and influence the respective receptors there.

This refers to CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are activated by cannabinoids and ultimately produce various effects, which we describe in detail in this article.

The difference between THC and CBD

The effect of THC and CBD on our receptors is often confused. For this reason, we would like to emphasize the crucial difference at this point, so that the misbelief disappears that the active ingredient works like marijuana.

In science, THC is referred to as a CB1 receptor antagonist. This means that THC binds to the CB1 cannabinoid receptors and ultimately stimulates them. This produces the effect known from marijuana consumption.

This is accompanied, for example, by greater sensitivity or increased consumption of food.

The cannabidiol substance, on the other hand, has other effects on our receptors. Compared to THC, the binding capacity of this substance is minimal.

Thus, CB1 receptors are not suppressed and, as a result, the possible negative effects of cannabis, such as excessive sensitivity and anxiety disorders, are eliminated.

THC vs CBD: The most important points in a nutshell

  • THC affects consciousness and causes a state of intoxication that can last for several hours and be detrimental to the psyche.
  • CBD does not cause a state of intoxication that clouds the psyche and possibly leads to anxiety and long-term consequences.
  • THC increases appetite, leading to the "eating attacks" known to marijuana consumers.
  • CBD, on the other hand, tends to reduce the feeling of hunger.
  • THC use, especially on a more regular basis, can contribute to the development of secondary damage such as psychosis, which can reduce the quality of life of those affected.
  • CBD, on the other hand, helps to calm both body and mind. This in turn can support the relief of pain.

Is cannabidiol legal?

In recent years, numerous scientific studies have been carried out to prove whether the substance is a legal means of successfully combating different types of complaints. Some of them we have linked to you at the end of the article, so that you can inform yourself additionally.

Further studies are underway to focus on the legality and appropriateness of cannabidiol. The success of these studies is increasingly underpinning the efficacy of the active ingredients.

For this reason, CBD is legal in many European countries, although there is still no uniform legal basis.

However, the number of legal companies and websites specialising in the production and distribution of the substance shows that there is no antipathy on the part of the judiciary and that there is a high demand from consumers.

Are there any side effects of Cannabidiol?

The numerous studies conducted showed that in most cases the substance can be consumed without consequences. Especially with small amounts (e.g. a few drops a day), side effects are almost impossible.

Cannabidiol is well tolerated even with a high consumption of 150mg daily. As some studies are still ongoing, scientists point out that 100% results may be available at the end of these studies.

So far only the combination of cannabidiol with other drugs, which could possibly lead to side effects, should be considered.

Cannabidiol and the Taking of Medications

It is assumed that possible side effects may occur in combination with antidepressants, beta-blockers or immunomodulators. The latter are pharmacological substances that serve to strengthen the natural immune reactions.

Taking steroids, anesthetics and benzodiazepines may also cause side effects. Benzodiazepines are active substances that have a muscle relaxing, anxiety-relieving or calming effect.

Here too, however, science is working meticulously to find out whether side effects can occur in combination with the active substance.

How is cannabidiol consumed?

Cannabidiol can be used as extract, flower, tea, as CBD crystal or liquid or as oil. Oils that can be purchased on websites are particularly popular at present. The basic trend is that oils will prevail on the market because they can be used in different ways.
