What is migraine?

Causes and conventional medical treatment
While it was previously assumed that migraine is due to a malfunction of the blood vessels in the brain, this view is now outdated.
In the context of migraine, a hereditary predisposition for a neurobiologically caused functional disorder of the brain and meninges is now assumed.
Temporarily, a migraine attack leads to a malfunction in the pain-regulating system of the brain.
Patients affected by migraine react excessively intensively to external stimuli.
In the brain stem there are various pain centers, also for migraine. In a person without pain, these pain centres are in a special state of balance.
Attack originates from the brain stem
In studies using imaging techniques, it has been found that in the context of a migraine attack, the migraine centre in the brain stem is intensively activated.
Scientists and physicians suspect that the migraine attack starts with an increased activity of certain nerve cells in the brain stem. The blood vessels in the brain are closely intertwined with nerve cells of the facial nerve.
The trigeminal nerve in the face forms fine ramifications extending into all walls of the blood vessels in the brain. When the nerve cells in the brain stem become overactive with a migraine attack, the trigeminal nerve sends pain signals to the brain.
Chemical messengers - neurotransmitters - become active
In the process, certain messenger substances are released. They cause the blood vessels to dilate and the walls of the vessels become more permeable for blood fluid. The neurotransmitter serotonin is said to play a key role in this process.
Blood components are released which lead to inflammation. In fact, the migraine attack is associated with a build-up and inflammation in brain tissue and meninges. This inflammation also leads to pain signals.
These impulses of pain signals ultimately lead to the well-known migraine headache. The inflammation has the effect that the normal pulse of the blood in the migraine is felt as a pulsating pain in the head.

In some migraine patients the attacks become so frequent and intense that acute therapy does not help much. Often the affected persons feel as if they have to live in constant darkness and shielded from external stimuli. This can make a normal everyday life almost impossible.

In the context of scientific research on cannabinoids such as CBD, scientists have discovered that a system of cannabinoid-like substances and associated receptor sites is naturally present in the human body.
Sensations such as pain are controlled by neurotransmitters that send certain signals to the brain via the nerve cells.
For this purpose they bind to receptors. The surface of the respective neurotransmitter (messenger substance) matches the surface of the receptor site.
In this way, certain physical reactions and sensations are controlled.
The interesting thing about cannabinoids from the hemp plant is that they also dock and bind to certain receptor sites in the human body.
They are therefore also partially able to influence physical reactions and sensations such as pain.
The interaction of chemical messengers during a pain attack
We have already seen above that neurotransmitters play a key role in triggering a migraine pain attack.
They lead to the significant dilatation of blood vessels as well as to inflammatory states, which are responsible for the pulsating migraine pain.
Among other things, there are two naturally occurring cannabinoids in the human organism which, together with the relevant receptors, initiate the opposite processes for pain relief.
Anandamide and 2-arachidonylglycerol suppress the vasodilatation responsible for migraine pain and have a regulating effect on the sensation of pain.
Cannabinoids work in the endo-cannabinoid system
Cannabinoids such as cannabidiol in oil sometimes have a certain similarity with the endo-cannabinoids mentioned above. They can connect to various receptors in the human nervous systemand also act there on certain body states such as pain.
First of all, the noise producing THC was determined.
Later, scientists realized that CBD also works in the human endo-cannabinoid system.

The study situation on CBD
Scientific research into the effect of CBD oil on pain in general is far from complete.
Here the real potential of cannabidiol against pain is increasingly recognised.
Therefore, the findings to date are still largely based on anecdotal and field reports from CBD users.
