For some time now, an ingredient of the hemp plant (cannabis), known as cannabidiol or CBD for short, has been increasingly used in dietary supplements and health products. The CBD oil, which is mostly produced from hemp seed oil with the addition of extracted cannabidiol, is particularly well known.
Much less common to most users are CBD crystals. We would like to introduce you to this crystalline bound ingredient. We will give you an overview of the special advantages and flexible application possibilities that an extraction of the substance as crystal can offer you.
Cannabidiol (CBD) - What is it?
Perhaps you are one of those people who, when cannabis is mentioned, first think of typical intoxicating substances and the associated legal restrictions on the use of hemp extracts. Regimentation regularly begins with the cultivation of hemp plants.
However, you may also be familiar with cannabis as a potent medicinal plant, which is particularly appreciated in complementary medicine and naturopathy. It is not for nothing that the Herbal Medicinal Products Platform Austria (HMPPA) named it medicinal plant of the year in Austria in 2018.
The useful and ornamental plant cannabis contains far more ingredients than the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is mainly responsible for the intoxication effect of certain cannabis products. THC is primarily derived from the resin of the cannabis plant and is described as psychoactive because it affects the psyche and consciousness of humans.
In addition to THC, cannabis has about 500 ingredients, including between 60 and 100 so-called cannabinoids, which include both THC and CBD. The latter is offered today in various forms of application, such as CBD oil or CBD crystal.
Cannabidiol in the Functional and Legal Consideration
The brain has certain places where the body's own substances and, with an appropriate fit, substances supplied from outside can "dock". These anatomically called "receptor sites" are an important part of the control and regulation of your physical system.
Previous scientific analyses assume that cannabinoids and thus also cannabidiole from crystals also bind to certain receptors. This can lead to desired effects.
In this context it might be interesting for you to know that your organism itself produces substances similar in chemical structure to cannabinoids. Scientists and physicians speak of endocannabinoids.
The prefix "endo" makes it clear that our body produces these substances itself. For example, they are involved in the regulation of pain.
Cannabidiol is different from THC
CBD differs from THC in a number of crucial respects. Among other things, this influences the legal assessment of products that do not contain THC. However, it also leads to differences in the so-called pharmacological effect of cannabidiol.
Pharmacology is generally concerned with how certain substances act in the human organism.
In summary, based on current knowledge, the following statements can be made about CBD:
- CBD is obtained from plants other than THC. There are certain types of commercial hemp that are very poor in THC. These plants are therefore not subject to any legal restrictions on cultivation.
- It is not psychoactive and therefore neither intoxicating nor addictive.
- The scientific research on the substance CBD has not yet been completed. In particular, it has not yet been conclusively clarified through which mechanisms CBD could have an effect. However, various studies have already shown that it has interesting health-promoting properties. These already make use of various prescription medicines. Also privately available means in different application forms like CBD oils, CBD capsules or CBD crystals seem to have positive effects.
- Products containing cannabidiol are not legally regulated if the THC content is below 0.2 percent. As a particularly pure form of the substance, the crystals in particular are usually completely free of THC components.
- The crystals are legally available on the market under the above conditions.
Why crystals - how and for what should they be used?
You're probably used to liquid, tablet-pressed or encapsulated forms of nutritional supplements and typical health products. That's why cannabidiol may seem exotic to you as a crystal.
Are you unsure how to use this form of CBD? You are also wondering if there are any particularities to consider when selecting cannabidiol crystal products and in their application?
What are the advantages of crystal extraction and how is the product used?
Plant ingredients must be extracted from plant parts - experts refer to this as "extracting" - if they are to be made available for consumption or in other forms of application. The form of application describes the form of application of a product which later contains the plant extract.
For example, you can take vegetable ingredients processed in capsules or rub substances mixed into an ointment into the skin. Some substances can be brought into a soluble form that you can inhale or inhale. Others are used in oily or aqueous solutions.
The aim is to achieve standardisation in the high-quality extraction of plant ingredients. With a standardized extract, the proportion of the desired plant substance in the finished product can be determined and proven.
In addition, proportions of undesirable substances - such as THC in the end product - have also been analysed and their proportion or absence detected.
How easily and effectively plant substances can be processed depends on their chemical structure. Some substances are difficult to dissolve in water, for example, and are very good in alcohols or oils.
Other substances are acids or contain acids as further subdivided substances and must therefore be extracted from the plant with additional specific extraction measures. Some methods use solvents or heating processes. When solvents are used, residues cannot be avoided in the later pure substance.
It is interesting for every herbal active ingredient whether the aim of extraction is a very pure form of the substance or whether possible accompanying substances in the ingredient should also be processed in a product at the end.
Today, CBD is mostly extracted with CO2. This method is considered to be particularly gentle because it does not require solvents.
The extraction of the CBD crystals takes place under pressure with CO2 gas (CO2 = carbon dioxide) and with a subsequent heating process which, among other things, converts the described acids into active CBD. The substance is obtained from the flowers and leaves of the female hemp plants, which originate from hemp plants poor in THC.
These useful hemp varieties are also known as industrial hemp.
CBD crystals as highly pure form
CBD crystals are the purest possible form of cannabidiol. It is the extracted solid from the parts of the plant which does not require any further processing after extraction.
When CBD is extracted in crystals, it does not need to be filled into capsules, often with the addition of fillers. It also does not have to be mixed with other oils, as is often the case with CBD oil. Also no ointment base is necessary for the application.
The crystals can be used directly in various applications. They offer you the widest range of possible applications compared to other CBD forms crystal by crystal.
The designation CBD crystals can be somewhat misleading. They are rather fine particles with a powdered sugar structure than crystals. Until recently, you could still consume and use them very flexibly by using them as...
- trickle right under your tongue,
- into drinks or food,
- stir into oil and take or rub into it,
- smoking with or without other tobacco products,
- vaporize over a vaporizer and inhale.
Advantages of crystal extraction
With around 98 percent and more, the crystals achieve the highest degree of purity of all cannabidiol extracts. THC is usually not contained in the crystal if it is a high quality crystal. If you value a very pure substance and would like to remain flexible in its use, crystals are your first choice.
Who is the crystal suitable for?
In addition to the flexibility of use offered by CBD crystals, you can also benefit in a special way from the possible effects of cannabidiol with CBD crystals. The extracted CBD crystals lack secondary substances and fillers, which is why the crystal extract is very effectively absorbed by your body.
If you want to get a potential overview of the positive effects of active ingredient crystals, various scientific clinical studies on cannabidiol will give you information.
It should be noted, however, that many studies have been conducted with high-dose CBD drugs. These can and must not be transferred 1:1 to the use of CBD crystals as food supplements and in products for general health promotion.
Food supplements and health products by their very nature do not aim at a medical effect, especially not at a healing effect.
However, the scientific studies will give you useful clues about the general direction in which cannabidiol works. A summary work by the Swiss author Samuel Büechi from 2017 offers you a good overview of the possible effects in different dosages and proportions in the medical field.
In general, according to current studies, the potential effects of drugs with CBD affect the following areas in particular
- mental balance
- and pain relief.
Does Cannabidiol as a crystal have side effects and what should I watch out for when buying?
The use of CBD crystals is considered to be very safe. This is generally true for any high quality product made from cannabis plant parts that do not contain THC.
The safety aspect was investigated in a scientific study conducted in 2011, which in turn analysed various individual studies on the subject (a so-called meta-study). The researchers at the University of Sao Paulo came to the conclusion that even permanent use of CBD does not pose a significant risk of side effects.
However, it is important for you to be aware that CBD crystals are of particularly pure substance. When you use the CBD crystals, an effect can therefore be particularly fast and powerful.
In addition, research on cannabidiols is not yet complete. For this reason, the use of the substance - not only as a crystal - should be avoided as a precaution during pregnancy and lactation.
Because cannabidiol inhibits two specific enzymes in the liver, it can interact with various drugs when you use CBD crystals. The drug substances may degrade more slowly and circulate longer in your body.
According to the current state of research, whether this leads to an increase in effectiveness depends very much on the individual case.
Potential interactions with CBD-containing drugs have already been described for some drug groups. Consequently, you should be more careful when using CBD crystals and not use them at the same time as the drugs in these groups:
- Proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole and others)
- beta blocker
- HIV antiviral drugs
- Drugs that influence the immune system (immunomodulators)
- calcium channel blocker
- Antihistamines (remedies for hay fever and other allergies)
What is particularly important for CBD crystals?
In order to obtain a particularly pure form of the ingredient, make sure that you buy high-quality CBD crystals manufactured under controlled conditions. Only with these crystals do you have the guarantee that the usual purity level of 98 percent and higher will be achieved.
CBD crystals should be produced under pharmaceutical conditions and standards. The degree of purity will be analytically proven with high-quality crystals. CBD crystals are very economical to use.
With cannabidiol, which was extracted as crystal, a pin-sized portion is usually sufficient. Therefore the substance as crystal in the economical application can also be a cheaper alternative for you in comparison with other products.
