CBD - can cannabinoid help with ADHD and ADS?

CBD - can cannabinoid help with ADHD and ADS?

The abbreviations ADHS and ADS stand for two neurobiological disorders that are increasingly becoming the focus of public attention, especially among children and young people. However, many of the symptoms in affected individuals continue into adulthood.

Especially children suffering from ADHD are unpleasantly noticed in school and kindergarten. They are restless, disrupt the lessons and cannot concentrate. This can lead to exclusion from the class. Maybe you have kids who are affected by this.

You may suffer from the disorder as an adult.

You may have heard about the possibility of using CBD oil for ADHD and Co. Many adult users have good experience with CBD in this area.

Scientists and physicians are also increasingly discovering the potential that cannabidiol (CBD) can offer here. In the following we summarize for you the state of scientific research and various facts about the use of CBD.

What is ADHD or ADS?

It is important to understand the two somewhat different neurobiological disorders that are hidden behind the abbreviations. The terms stand for attention deficit disorders with and without hyperactivity.

Only gradually are scientists and physicians beginning to discover the presumed causes of attention deficit disorders in the field of neurobiology. Some experts do not consider the disorders to be a disease.

Whether behavioral disorder or illness, it is important to understand that diagnosed persons actually suffer from symptoms and cannot simply stop their sometimes very conspicuous behavior.

In the social context, the parents of children with ADHD often come under massive pressure because they are accused of educational errors in dealing with the apparently difficult children and adolescents.

Even adults who suffer from these disorders do not often encounter understanding of their environment. Perhaps you have had very similar experiences here and are therefore now interested in CBD in this field.

Attention deficit disorders - what is it all about?

The two attention deficit disorders are often mentioned in the same breath. There is a deficit of attentionbehind both abbreviations. However, one form of the disorder is accompanied by hyperactivity, which particularly helps it to attract negative attention in the public perception. The other form runs without hyperactivity.

It is not only hyperactivity that leads to considerable suffering in patients. In the case of affected children and adolescents, this also includes their relatives and parents.

Parents are confronted with difficulties in school and kindergarten, with bad grades and also in their home environment with various problems. Even adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD or ADS feel that they often fall short of their possibilities both professionally and privately.

In the following, we will introduce you to the different forms of attention deficit disorders, their probable causes and the classical treatment methods used so far.

The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

The so-called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is behind the abbreviation ADHS. In Germany, 2-6 % of all children and adolescents are said to suffer from this neurobiological disorder. In child psychiatry it is considered the most common disease. Laymen also like to speak of the so-called Fidgety Philipp Syndrome.

The fact that the psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffmann described typical symptoms of a child with ADHD as early as 1844 in his Struwwelpeter shows that this is not a new disease.

Hoffmann is considered the first physician to document ADHS. Since then, scientists and doctors have been discussing whether ADHD is really a disease. Opinions in specialist circles differ here.

Some experts are of the opinion that it is a disease in the medical sense of the word, while others consider the disease to be fiction.

For people affected by ADHD, the question of how to assess the phenomenon does not arise. They feel a considerable amount of suffering because, among other things

  • with their lack of concentration
  • with uncontrollable impulsivity
  • with hyperactivity
to do with this.

Attention Deficit Syndrome (ADS)

With ADS the focus is on the inattentiveness of those affected. The vernacular of children and adolescents likes to speak of the Hans-look-in-the-air.

The parties concerned
  • are dreamy.
  • have trouble concentrating.
  • often lose items.
  • forget appointments and dates.
  • have difficulty completing tasks.

Although children and adolescents with attention deficit syndrome without hyperactivity seem to be less conspicuous than ADHD patients, they too often have a high level of suffering.

In an environment increasingly geared towards performance pressure and perfection, they too experience little understanding, discrimination and poor evaluations in the school environment.

Those affected by an attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity usually develop very individual characteristics in the type and intensity of symptoms. This constantly presents new challenges for both diagnostics and treatment.

In addition, children and adolescents with ADHD are often particularly vital, lively, curious and intelligent individuals. Often these characteristics, which are very positive, further reduce the understanding of the social environment.

Many people here simply ask themselves: Can't these children and young people just pull themselves together more? But they definitely can't.

According to current knowledge, you can imagine an attention deficit disorder in such a way that people who have been diagnosed with it are almost overwhelmed by environmental stimuli. They cannot filter the corresponding stimuli from the outside in their importance.

From this point of view it seems understandable that especially children and adolescents with neurobiological diseases are tense, restless, nervous and hyperactive in ADHD.

CBD as alternative treatment for ADHS and ADS

The known causes of attention deficit disorders are

Research into attention deficit disorders has not yet been completed. To date, 4 factors have been identified that presumably trigger or at least favour these neurobiological disorders in interaction:

  1. Genetics

A hereditary predisposition plays a role. Some twins are 80 percent likely to both suffer from the disorder.

  1. Changes in certain brain structures

Investigations with modern imaging techniques such as tomographs reveal changes in the brain structures of ADHD and Co. that are specifically responsible for behavioral control and attention.

  1. Imbalances in certain messenger substances in the brain

According to current knowledge, there are imbalances, especially in the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. In this context you might also think of CBD and cannabinoids if you have already had some experience with CBD. We will deal with this in another section.

  1. Environmental influences especially during pregnancy and early life

Obviously, factors such as alcohol and nicotine consumption by the mother during pregnancy, complications at birth and premature birth are associated with an increased risk of attention deficit disorder such as ADHD.

In the further course of the first years of life, increased consumption of media, especially television, as well as modern living conditions are suspected of favouring ADHD and the like.

None of these possible causes could be identified as the only decisive factor so far. Most experts believe that attention deficit disorders such as ADHD are caused by a combination of different factors.

What happens with attention deficit disorders in adulthood?

In over 50% of children affected by attention deficit disorder such as ADHD in childhood and adolescence, the disorder persists into adulthood. It is estimated that in Germany alone, more than 2 million people suffer from it as adults.

In many cases the appearance of the symptoms changes over time. Hyperactivity in ADHD often recedes somewhat into the background, while lack of concentration and disorganized behavior place a heavy burden on those affected as adults.

Patients therefore have to struggle with personal problems and the organisation of their everyday life.

Diagnostics and drug treatment

The diagnosis of attention deficit disorders alone is regularly difficult. Predominantly psychiatric symptoms must be classified, which are rarely clear. Misdiagnoses are quite common.

There is now a fixed catalogue of symptoms which helps to distinguish ADHD and attention syndrome without hyperactivity from other psychiatric disorders and simple behavioural abnormalities.

The drug Ritalin with the active ingredient methylphenidate is very frequently used in drug treatment. This stimulant belongs to the amphetamine group and it falls under the Narcotics Law. Its effect occurs because the drug increases the concentration of dopamine in the brain.

Dopamine plays a key role when it comes to concentration, drive and movement control in humans. In many patients, especially ADHD patients, Ritalin can reduce inattention and restlessness. However, there is usually a risk of serious side effects.

For this very reason, many people with the disease would be relieved if CBD were an alternative or supportive supplement in dealing with ADHD and Co. Indeed, CBD could have some potential in this direction.

Cannabidiol from cannabis plant for relief of ADHD

What CBDs can do for attention-deficit disorders

Many adult users have good experience with CBD in ADHS and Co. A possible explanation for the support that CBD can provide for ADHD, for example, may be hidden in its biochemical structure.

CBD belongs to the so-called cannabinoids. The human organism has an endocannabinoid system. This was discovered during research on cannabis plants and cannabinoids such as CBD.

Obviously, different messenger substances in the human brain show a certain similarity in their structure to CBD and other cannabinoids.

In the endocannabinoid system, the messenger substances in the brain, such as CBD, connect to receptor sites via which signals are transmitted to nerves. These signal structures affect important areas such as sleep, rest, pain perception and many more.

It is possible that CBD can compensate for existing imbalances, such as those that occur in the brain in the case of attention deficit disorders. So far, however, this assumption about the effect of CBD on ADHD and Co. has not yet been scientifically proven. In particular, the use of CBD oil is currently based on user reports.

What does science say?

The study situation on CBD and ADHS is still very poor. It is limited to individual studies and case reports with the use of medical CBD, which, however, are expected to have consistently positive effects in ADHD and ADHD.

In particular, an improvement in the overall symptoms of severe attention deficit disorders has already been observed. However, medical CBD was used. In animal models, too, mechanisms have been identified in some cases that indicate a possible effect of CBD.
