High blood pressure is considered an important risk factor for serious cardiovascular disease and critical events such as heart attack and stroke. Maybe you're dealing with hypertension. In this article you will learn the facts known so far about CBD oil against hypertension.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension, as doctors call high blood pressure, is widespread and is considered a widespread disease.
Statistically speaking, the chance is relatively high because 20-30 million people in the Federal Republic of Germany alone have high blood pressure.
Different drugs are used to treat high blood pressure, in order to lower the blood pressure with medication. This is not always successful and can be associated with side effects.
How high blood pressure develops
Elevated blood pressure values are in themselves initially to be seen as a regulatory disturbance in the human cardiovascular system. It is about the pressure that the blood exerts on the vessel walls when the heart is pumping.
The vessels in turn oppose this pressure with their own resistance, this is called vascular resistance. From these two components pressure against the vessel walls, the blood pressure values are generated which can be measured.
When blood pressure is elevated, this pressure reaches a level that exceeds the normal level.
In hypertension, massive increases in blood pressure occur very quickly. These are outside the normal, functional fluctuations. Pressure and vascular resistance increase, the heart has to work harder to move the blood through the body and pump it against the vessels.
Why is high blood pressure so dangerous?
Even in healthy people, blood pressure is subject to fluctuations during the course of the day. The heart and the entire circulatory system adapt the pressure to the respective requirements.
For example, physical activity can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
High blood pressure is more of a risk factor than a disease in itself. Nevertheless, this can be associated with immense health risks.
Elevated blood pressure can cause discomfort, but it does not have to.
The health risks are caused by the consequences of high blood pressure. These range from heart attacks to strokes, damaged kidneys and eyes, cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure - all with sometimes fatal results in the short term and in the long term.
Definitions and values
Hypertension is divided into a primary and a secondary form.
In the primary form, no organic cause for hypertension can be found.
In the secondary form of hypertension, the increase in blood pressure is caused by another disease or by a specific organ.
For example, hyperthyroidism can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
Most people suffer from primary hypertension also known as idiopathic. This form of hypertension is much more difficult to treat because no other condition can be treated as the primary cause.
However, even primary hypertension does not usually stand alone.
Scientists and physicians establish connections with overweight, diabetes and arteriosclerosis.
Together with these three factors, hypertension forms the so-called metabolic syndrome.
The term metabolic is the medical term for metabolism.
From this it can be seen that the metabolic syndrome is a combination of different metabolic disorders.
Not always, but often hypertension occurs with these other risk factors for cardiovascular health.
Different severity levels
If you are interested in hypertension, the blood pressure values themselves are also interesting for you.
Optimal to normal blood pressure ranges from 120-139 to 80-89 mmHg. You probably already know that blood pressure is measured over two levels. Blood pressure values from 130 mmHg to 85 mmHg are described as highly normal or still normal.
The first value reflects the systolic pressure in case of blood pressure. This is the maximum pressure developed in the left ventricle during tension. The technical term systolic refers to the tensing and ejection phase of this ventricle.
The lower reading is the diastolic blood pressure. This is the lowest pressure that occurs during the relaxation and expansion phase of blood pressure in the heart muscle. During diastole the ventricle fills with new blood.
The blood pressure is measured in the unit mmHg. 1 mmHg corresponds to the pressure that 1 mm (mm) exerts on a mercury column (Hg).
Slightly elevated blood pressure starts at 140 and ends at 159 mmHg to 90-99 mmHg. The blood pressure is moderately increased at values between 160-179 to 100-100 mmHg. Severe hypertension begins with values above 180 for systolic values and above 110 mmHg for diastolic values.
Many affected people do not know about their high blood pressure for a long time. They therefore do nothing about high blood pressure. An elevated blood pressure may become noticeable. Hypertension is often accompanied by symptoms and complaints such as
- an increased tendency to sweat
- Facial erythema
- Loss of performance during physical activity
- male potency problems
- poor sleep
Causes of high blood pressure
Especially in the primary form of high blood pressure, it is not yet clear what causes it. There are increasing signs that the modern Western lifestyle with its hectic pace and stress is promoting high blood pressure.
If other risk factors such as obesity, lack of exercise or elevated blood lipid levels are added, many people develop elevated blood pressure after a certain age. This is one of the reasons why high blood pressure is almost considered a normal disease of old age.
Cannabidiol (CBD) for high blood pressure
For a long time, the medical field has only dealt with the effect of psychoactive THC on blood pressure.
There it was found that THC has an effect on blood pressure, but that this can lead to unpleasant and undesirable blood pressure fluctuations with greatly reduced and then again increased blood pressure.
It is precisely these fluctuations in blood pressure that are seen as a risk for heart disease.
Only recently, the active ingredient in hemp, the CBD, has also been investigated in the fight against high blood pressure. You probably already know that CBD or cannabidiol is a non-psychotic cannabinoid from the cannabis plant Cannabis sativa. Does CBD work against high blood pressure?
The Endocannabinoid System
Many people interested in alternatives to drugs for various ailments have recently discovered CBD oil for themselves.
They use CBD, for example, for pain or insomnia.
Scientists and physicians are only gradually realising what these effects of CBD, described by many users as very positive, might be based on.
Similar to the psychoactive THC, CBD acts on the body's own endocannabinoid system.
These are receptor sites in the human nervous system to which messenger substances are connected.
Certain physical reactions occur via these messenger substances.
For example, the pain originates here. Like the body's own messenger substances, cannabinoids such as CBD can dock to the receptor sites and act for or against certain processes.
What does this have to do with hypertension?
Reduction of vascular resistance and calming of blood pressure
As you have learned above, blood pressure has something to do with the pressure and vascular resistance in the blood vessels.
If blood pressure rises, pressure and vascular resistance are increased. There is increasing evidence that CBD may be able to affect vascular resistance and also stress reduction in the human body via the endocannabinoid system.
For example, a study from 2017 demonstrated a reduction in blood pressure values in healthy volunteers. The reduction in blood pressure was observed both at rest and under stress conditions.
CBD may also be helpful against high blood pressure in other ways.
Since blood pressure is often combined with other factors such as arteriosclerosis, a potential anti-inflammatory effect of CBD could be effective against high blood pressure.
Arteriosclerosis is always accompanied by inflammation of the vessels. These inflammations are also associated with high blood pressure because they increase vascular resistance and thus blood pressure.
In general, many users of CBD find it pleasant that they can better protect themselves against stress with CBD oil.
Here, too, further scientific research is needed to explain these effects. It is possible that CBD has an overall positive effect on the human organism, for example by promoting restful sleep and more calming.
Conclusion on the use of CBD in hypertension
At present, it has not yet been scientifically proven that CBD is effective against high blood pressure. Further scientific research is needed here.
Since high blood pressure can nevertheless be a serious health disorder with far-reaching consequences, it is worthwhile for you to try CBD oil for high blood pressure.
