Cannabis and depression - great potential or sound and smoke?

Cannabis and depression - great potential or sound and smoke?

It is estimated that over 5 million people in Germany alone suffer from depression. The number of unreported cases is high and these figures do not take into account the fact that many people suffer from depressive episodes several times in their lives. This clinical picture has meanwhile matured into a widespread disease.

Since classic drug treatment is often associated with severe side effects, many patients are looking for alternatives. Cannabis medicine may be able to offer them.

Some people are experiencing depression right now with the currently very popular CBD oil. Can such individual experiences with cannabis oil now also be scientifically proven?

Here you can learn more about the topic, especially about the state of scientific research in this area.

What's depression?

Depressed people have to deal with a serious mental illness that can severely burden their lives into everyday life. According to previous findings, our brain metabolism changes with depressive disorders.

More precisely, various messenger and signalling substances lose their balance.

We thereby change our personal assessment of feelings, environmental stimuli and stress factors.

Many, very different symptoms

Depression can be associated with various characteristic symptoms. This includes, among other things
  • listlessness
  • hopelessness
  • gratuitous exhaustion
  • Feelings of worthlessness and despair
  • a pronounced tendency to brood.

If we suffer from depression, we hardly endure any further stress and are often no longer able to"simply" cope with our everyday life. In some, the disease manifests itself in restlessness and sometimes aggressiveness.

In many cases this is compounded by the fact that the disease can be accompanied by physical symptoms such as pain, tension, cardiovascular problems and shortness of breath, to name but a few.

Sometimes diagnosis is difficult for doctors because the corresponding symptoms cannot be assigned to the depressive clinical picture at first glance.

Retreat into eternal silence

It is also particularly noticeable that those affected often withdraw from their environment and that they can hardly explain their changed behaviour to people close to them. Since only about 35 out of 100 people seek medical help, many ill people remain alone with their problems.

This is particularly dangerous because this disease can also lead to suicidal thoughts. Before it stops at the thought of it, we recommend that you tell someone about yourself and find professional help in the long run.

What are the causes of depression?

Many questions remain unanswered with regard to depressive disorders. On the one hand, this concerns the exact mechanisms that lead to altered perceptions and feelings in the brain during the disease. Some scientists assume that information can no longer be correctly processed via the nerve cells because messenger substances change or fail.

Others assign the stress hormone cortisol a key role in the overall event.

The causes of the disease have also not yet been fully clarified. It has been proven that various primary diseases or physical conditions can lead to depression.

These include diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, Parkinson's disease, female menopause and hormonal disorders. If a depression develops due to such pre-existing conditions, we call it somatogenic.

Other types of diseases arise after severe psychological stress, which we could not completely cope with or of which we were not even aware.

A hereditary predisposition is also being discussed in this context, as some families have an increasing incidence of the disease.

The complex clinical pictures of depression, which are expressed individually in almost every person, are difficult to grasp and even more difficult to treat.

How is classically treated?

You have probably heard about how this disease is treated yourself: Usually it is a combination of psychotherapeutic measures, other therapeutic measures and the use of psychotropic drugs.

Interestingly, however, cannabis use has also had a centuries-old tradition of treating this mental disorder since the late Middle Ages. Such approaches come mainly from India. There, the cannabis planthas been regarded as very helpful in this context for several 100 years.

Extracts containing cannabis were also rapidly introduced into European treatment methods. In earlier times it was mainly cannabis flowers that were smoked. However, not only positive effects are described for cannabis use in this context.

Even today, under scientific conditions, there is evidence that at least one active cannabis substance can possibly increase the risk for this disease and other mental illnesses.

How this possible contradiction can be explained in the evaluation of cannabis is shown below.

Overcoming depression with cannabis

What can cannabinoids do?

The cannabis plant contains substances that we call cannabinoids. Both the noise generating substance THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) belong to it.

A distinction is made between different types of hemp. While cannabis sativa is kept low in THC, cannabis indica is rich in addictive substances and therefore the basis of typical illegal drugs such as marijuana.

The oil you can buy from us contains no or only the smallest permissible amount of the psychoactive substance. Cannabidiol is present in both types of hemp, but in different quantities.

If you look at different hemp products such as a cannabis flower and try to classify their effect, it depends on which plant it comes from.

Cannabinoids and endogenous processes

Cannabinoids are interesting for scientific research because their study has led to the identification of similar substances in the human body. We're talking about the endocannabinoids. They are part of the so-called endocannabinoid system.

This consists of receptor sites at various key sites of the human organism. Certain messenger substances are suitable for these receptor sites because their surface resembles the receptor sites.

When messenger substances combine with the receptor sites, the transmission of information into the nerve cells leads to physical or psychological reactions.

Among other things, the development of pain and the triggering of a feeling of anxiety are located here. Depending on their orientation, the messenger substances can promote appropriate reactions or prevent them.

The cannabinoids from the cannabis plant also fit some receptor sites. THC and cannabidiol partly combine with different receptors.

The mechanism of action of CBD

Some users of cannabidiol oil report that they would experience a mood-enhancing effect after use. Many people treat themselves with the oil in this way in mild depressive disorders, without actually calling the mental illness by its name or going to medical treatment.

Since in many cases the mental disorder is associated with an imbalance in the messenger substance serotonin, modern scientific methods can now also be used to explain how cannabidiol could lead to an improvement in the disease.

CBD docks to receptor 5-HT1A. This is the serotonin receptor, which means that it is activated by the messenger substance serotonin.

Although serotonin no longer plays a key role in depression, as was the case in the past, CBD in particular can gently promote improvements in the disease by activating specific receptors.

The advantage of the cannabinoid is that it shows hardly any side effects and has a fast effect. However, cannabidiol is not the only active substance in cannabis medicine that can be used to treat these serious mental disorders.

The current state of research

In the medical field, cannabis-containing preparations containing both THC and cannabidiol are frequently used.

Corresponding examinations by doctors have led to the following findings: Patients who have received medical cannabis on prescription for other diseases emphasize, among other things, the beneficial effect on depressive moods.

Not every extract or every product works equally well

However, it should also be borne in mind that the use of cannabis drugs that produce noise could also increase the risk of psychosis in some people. The exact background to this still has to be researched. You seem to be going back to THC.

In any case, current knowledge suggests that it is not advisable to simply use any cannabis drug to treat depression.

The use of different cannabis products, such as cannabis flowers, does not necessarily give you the desired result because you may not be able to maintain the same dosage with the same claim.

Because it is not known for every cannabis flower which proportions of which cannabinoids it contains. Especially in the medical field, standardized extracts from the cannabis plant are important.

On the other hand, purely synthetic extracts do not seem to be ideal either and do not always have the desired effect.

Scientists suspect based on already available study results that other active substances in the hemp plant together with the cannabinoids could also be responsible for the mood brightening.

The focus of their attention is on terpenes, for example. They also appear to be able to dock at corresponding receptor sites in the endocannabinoid system. You may benefit from a full-spectrum oil because it contains many of the accompanying substances of cannabinoids.

A view

Since cannabis research in general has long been overshadowed by illegal drugs such as marijuana and hashish, scientists have only recently begun to deal more intensively with the possibilities of hemp in medicine and independent therapy.

Treatment of depression with cannabidiol

Meanwhile, the first studies and also positive feedback from users indicate that cannabidiol in particular is a novel drug with few side effects. antidepressant could be. Large studies are currently being carried out in the USA and Australia. Among other things War veterans included in the investigations

The scientists hope that these studies will lead to insights into the Possibilities of CBD in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorders.

Research into the cannabis plant and its effects on depression is still in its infancy. However, there is already an awareness that cannabis products can help to treat the disease in a number of ways.

Let us consider the serious side effects that some classic psychotropic drugs have. good news. Probably none of us would like to deal with impotence, weight gain, dry mouth and many other symptoms in addition to the severe mental illness.

It is also these side effects that often lead patients to discontinue treatment with psychotropic drugs. So there is hope to be able to help depressives with cannabis products without side effects. Cannabis Oilcould become an alternative.

We will keep an eye on this development on the subject of cannabis, keep you up to date on further findings and, in particular, inform you about the positive experiences of our customers with CBD oil. Maybe you've had your own experience with this?
