Can CBD, cannabidiol or hemp oil help with cancer?

Many cancer patients in search of alternative treatment options are wondering whether CBD, hemp oil or cannabis extracts can also help with cancer.

CBD and cancer - Are there chances of therapy?

The findings from the few studies carried out on this topic are mainly derived from animal experiments or from studies carried out on isolated tumour cells. In the use of cannabis products in cancer patients, the results were probably positive.

According to this, different symptoms of a cancer disease could perhaps also be treated with CBD. There also appears to be evidence that the use of cannabis products may inhibit cancer growth.

The investigations dealt with the question of whether cannabis products are able to inhibit the growth of cervical, breast and prostate cancer cells or leukaemia cancer cells. Since the studies were not conducted in humans, their validity is limited.

Nevertheless some interesting observations could be made: In experiments with neuroblastoma cells , cannabis products could prove helpful. So far, there is no recommendation on an optimal dosage of the individual preparations. The administration of cannabis preparations should therefore always be discussed with the attending physician.

In addition to naturopathic applications, patients are increasingly turning to alternative medicines that promise good chances of recovery. Many people expect an alternative treatment to alleviate symptoms and side effects.

What help does CDB offer in cancer treatment?

The use of cannabinoid during chemotherapy can reduce unpleasant side effects such as nausea and vomiting. The effect is based on cannabidiol acid (CBDA) . In various studies it was found that thetetrahydrocannabiole in combination had a higher efficacy than each of the three active ingredients alone.

This combination of active substances is found in cannabis flowers and cannabis flower extracts. As a result of radiation or chemotherapy, damage to the oral mucosa can often occur, which in turn leads to painful inflammation.

It is believed that cannabis products have anti-inflammatory properties and can thus relieve the pain of oral mucosa inflammation.

In addition, the substance could be helpful for other accompanying symptoms that cancer patients often suffer from. The cannabinoid is said to have a positive influence on pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders .

Cannabis products in pain therapy

Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, the cannabinoid could also be an effective aid in pain caused by cancer. CBD as support in pain therapy for cancer may be an alternative. Cancer patients suffering from bone pain in particular could benefit from treatment.

Often patients suffer from depression due to their cancer - cannabis products can have antidepressant properties. It was found that the hemp preparations interfere with the brain metabolism and increase the concentration of serotonin in the blood. This mode of action leads to a noticeable improvement in the mood of cancer patients. Most cancer diseases often lead to anxiety.

CBD can suppress anxiety and promote the repression or forgetting of fear-causing and traumatic events - sometimes even at low levels of application.

Can CBD oil relieve the pain of cancer patients?

Cancer patients could benefit from the use of cannabidiol-containing drugs. By activating the enzyme CYP1A1 , cannabidiol protects the genetic material. The enzyme might contribute to the faster excretion of substances that damage the genetic material.

Hemp products could also prevent nerve damage caused by chemotherapeutic drugs, thereby protecting patients from permanent complaints and limitations. The damage to nerve cells could probably be mitigated and prevented by cannabis products.

CBD oil has an appetite-stimulating effect and could be used in the future to combat loss of appetite in cancer patients. Heavy weight loss often leads to cancer-related wasting and is one of the most common causes of death from cancer.

Before using a hemp product, the advantages and possible side effects should be carefully weighed and a treatment should always be discussed with a doctor.

How does CBD work in the body?

The cannabinoid has an activating effect on the CB1 receptors in the brain and calms the nervous and immune system. Hemp oils with a high THC content would therefore probably have a positive effect on various types of cancer. In chemotherapy, the CBD substance could be used to support the treatment of nausea, pain and cramps.

It is believed that cannabinoids can also stop the growth of cancerous tumours and regenerate damaged cells. THC is an active substance in hemp which is said to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, anxiolytic and anti-depressant properties.

Research into the mode of action of cannabis preparations

Current research focuses on cannabinoids that recognise cancer cells and form a protein on their surface. This should enable the body's own defence cells in the immune system to dock to the cancer cells and destroy them in the process.

Some researchers believe that tumour growth could be stopped by the use of cannabinoids. When cancer cells are no longer able to form blood vessels in the body, their lifeline is cut off and further spread of the cancer cells is prevented.

Scientists at the Università degli studi dell'Insubria in the Italian city of Busto Arsizio discovered that cannabis inhibits the formation of new blood vessels in tumours through its different mechanisms. They concluded from this that the special effect of the hemp active substance on tumour and endothelial cells supported the hypothesis that cannabidiols could be an effective substance for cancer therapy.

Other scientists are also engaged in research into the mode of action of hemp oils. Up to now, it has only been possible to prove in animal experiments that the active substance can be used to curb the growth of cancerous tumours. This should even be possible in the late stages.

Apparently, the cannabidiols cause the genes responsible for metastasis growth to be switched off. Clinical long-term studies with patients have not yet been conducted.

Is CBD oil or cannabis oil an alternative in pain therapy?

The types of cancer on which hemp oil products have had an effect include breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, uterine cancer and prostate cancer. In this context, cannabinoids without psychological effect are also believed to inhibit the growth of tumours.

In the USA, the effects of cannabis have been studied for more than 30 years with regard to a supportive cure for cancer. Scientists at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco carried out various studies during this period in which they examined cannabinoids for the gene ID-1 . This gene is largely responsible for the onset of cancer the spread of cancer cells.

Cannabinoids could reduce or completely prevent the growth of metastases in aggressive cancers. The scientists have set themselves the goal of proving that cancer cells regress under treatment with cannabinoids.

CBD oils contain important ingredients that cannot be produced by the human body itself. In addition to vitamins and fibres and polyunsaturated fatty acids, these also include cannabinoids.

Cannabidiol oil could be used in the future for cancer. The substance is already considered an effective and legal helper for many health problems.

Cannabis oil is made from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. When used for medicinal purposes, the seeds are pressed separately from the hemp plant in an oil mill to produce hemp oil. During this process all valuable ingredients are preserved.

bottom line

Hemp products cannot replace orthodox cancer therapy by oncology. However, thanks to the findings of new investigations and studies, it seems possible that pain and side effects of classic cancer treatments can be reduced by means of an alternative pain therapy (with CBD oil). However, the results cannot be generalised.

Concrete statements by clinical studies have not yet been made. Nevertheless, it is likely that cancer patients could be treated with a cannabinoid in the future. The additional use of cannabinoids could reduce discomfort and unpleasant side effects from which cancer patients often suffer and improve the quality of life.
